Every responsible workplace should have a Safety Advisor in place that is the keeper and go-to-person for everything safety. But what makes a good Safety Advisor? Your workplace Safety Advisor has been appointed with the responsibility of ensuring your workplace is one that is a healthy and safe environment for you to be in, along with providing all staff and contractors the basic knowledge and advice of where safety features and equipment can be found (such as fire extinguishers, eye-wash stations, AEDs, safety documents and more, what to do in an emergency and ensuring the workplace is kept up-to-date on hazard assessments and certifications.

On July 11th, Air Canada Flight 33 from Toronto to Sydney, Australia was forced to make an emergency landing in Honolulu due to extreme turbulence – injuring 37 people. While flight turbulence may not have been preventable, most injuries were.

Get ready for your COR Audit! The Alberta Construction Safety Association introduced the ACSA 2019 COR Audit Tool in January 2019. All companies requiring COR audits will now be audited using this new standard. There are significant changes in legislation and the audit tool over the last year, it is important that company health and safety programs are updated to include these requirements.

Are You Ready for the New COR Audit?

Are You Ready for the New COR Audit?

Have you adapted your safety program to comply with the new COR Legislation that came into effect this past January? Or are you going to be applying for your COR Audit for the first time? No matter your level of experience with COR, all companies will be audited at a new level of standards, including updates to:

  1. New element added: Public, Visitors and Contracted Employers (Element 2);
  2. New element added: Health and Safety Committees/Health and Safety Representatives (Element 3) and;
  3. New legislated content: Workplace violence and harassment prevention plans are evaluated within the Hazard Control element (Element 6).

In preparation for your audit, you should also familiarize yourself with the ASCA’s New Audit Tool Highlights such as:

  • The new audit tool will consist of 10 elements in total, with 5 fewer questions than the prior tool
  • The Auditor will award zero or full points and the positive indicator requirement has increased to a minimum of 70% (unless otherwise specified)
  • Audit timelines have also changed with the Data Collection Period remaining at 45 days, but the Report Writing & Submission dropping down to a maximum of 21 days
