Contractor Prequalification — Alberta
Contractor prequalification is the process by which owners and prime contractors in Alberta verify that subcontractors meet minimum safety, insurance, and compliance requirements before being allowed to work on a project. Common prequalification platforms used in Alberta include ISNetworld, Avetta, and ComplyWorks.
Before a major Alberta owner or prime contractor will let a subcontractor on their site, they want to know that the subcontractor has their safety in order. Contractor prequalification is the formal process of verifying that. It has become a standard requirement in construction, energy, and industrial sectors across Alberta.
What prequalification checks
Prequalification platforms typically verify: WCB clearance letters (confirming the contractor is in good standing with WCB-Alberta), liability insurance certificates, safety program documentation, COR or SECOR certification status, incident rates (total recordable incident rate, lost-time incident rate), and sometimes training records for key personnel.
Each owner or prime contractor sets their own minimum requirements. Some require COR; others accept a safety program without certification. Some require specific incident rate thresholds.
Common Alberta prequalification platforms
ISNetworld (ISN), Avetta, and ComplyWorks are the three most common prequalification platforms used by Alberta owners and primes. Each has its own interface, document requirements, and grading system. A contractor working with multiple owners may need to maintain profiles on more than one platform.
Maintaining these profiles requires keeping documents current — expired insurance certificates, lapsed WCB clearances, or outdated safety programs will trigger a non-compliant status and can result in being removed from an approved contractor list.
Prequalification and COR
COR certification is increasingly required or preferred by Alberta owners and primes as part of prequalification. Some owners require COR as a hard requirement; others give preference to COR-holding contractors in the bidding process.
For subcontractors who want to work with major Alberta owners in construction and energy, COR is effectively a commercial requirement — not just a safety credential.
