OHS Code Alberta

The Alberta regulation containing detailed technical requirements for specific workplace hazards and work activities — working at heights, confined space, electrical, lockout/tagout, and more.

The Occupational Health and Safety Code (OHS Code) is the most detailed of Alberta's three OHS instruments. It contains specific technical requirements for managing particular hazards and work activities, organized into 40+ parts each covering a specific topic.

What the OHS Code covers

The OHS Code is organized into parts: Part 2 (hazard assessment), Part 4 (chemical hazards), Part 6 (working alone), Part 9 (fall protection), Part 11 (first aid), Part 15 (lockout/tagout), Part 23 (confined space), Part 33 (excavating and trenching), Part 40 (electrical), and many others.

When an OHS officer issues an order citing a specific provision, the citation will typically reference a Part and Section of the OHS Code. Understanding which Part applies to your operation is essential for compliance.

Frequently asked questions

The Alberta OHS Code has 40+ parts covering everything from general hazard assessment to specific activities like working at heights, confined space entry, electrical work, and excavating. Not all parts apply to every workplace — the relevant parts depend on the work activities and hazards present.
The OHS Code is published by the Government of Alberta and available free online at alberta.ca. Safety Ahead can help you identify which parts apply to your operation and what compliance looks like in practice.
