Partnerships in Injury Reduction (PIR) — Alberta

Partnerships in Injury Reduction (PIR) is a WCB-Alberta program that provides premium rebates to employers who hold a current COR or SECOR certificate and meet industry safety performance benchmarks. Rebates can reach up to 20% of annual WCB premiums.

Partnerships in Injury Reduction (PIR) is the WCB-Alberta program that rewards employers for investing in safety. Employers who hold a current COR or SECOR certificate and whose industry meets safety performance benchmarks receive a rebate on their annual WCB premiums. For many Alberta employers, the PIR rebate is a significant financial return on their investment in COR.

How PIR rebates work

PIR rebates are calculated at the industry level, not the individual employer level. WCB-Alberta looks at the overall injury performance of the industry group. If the industry performs well — fewer injuries, lower costs — all COR-holding employers in that industry receive a rebate.

The rebate percentage varies by industry and year. In strong-performing years, rebates can reach 20% of annual WCB premiums. In years where the industry has poor performance, rebates may be lower or zero.

Who qualifies for PIR

To qualify for a PIR rebate, an employer must hold a current, valid COR or SECOR certificate at the time WCB-Alberta calculates the rebate. A lapsed or suspended certificate disqualifies the employer for that year.

The employer must also be in good standing with WCB-Alberta — no outstanding assessments or compliance issues.

PIR and the business case for COR

For many Alberta employers, the PIR rebate is the most tangible financial return on COR. An employer paying $50,000 per year in WCB premiums could receive up to $10,000 back in a strong rebate year — which often exceeds the annual cost of maintaining COR.

The rebate is not guaranteed and varies year to year, but it is a real financial incentive that makes the COR investment easier to justify to ownership.

Frequently asked questions

It varies by industry and year. The maximum is 20% of annual WCB premiums, but actual rebates depend on how the industry as a whole performed. WCB-Alberta publishes rebate percentages annually.
No. WCB-Alberta automatically calculates and issues PIR rebates to eligible employers. You do not need to apply — you just need to hold a current COR or SECOR certificate.
If your COR certificate lapses or is suspended, you are not eligible for the PIR rebate for that year. This is one of the most common reasons Alberta employers lose rebate eligibility — a missed maintenance audit or a failed re-certification.
