A standardized document that describes the hazards, safe handling, storage, and emergency response information for a hazardous product. Required under Alberta WHMIS legislation.
A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) — formerly called a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) — is a standardized document that provides detailed information about a hazardous product: its chemical composition, physical and health hazards, safe handling and storage requirements, personal protective equipment, and emergency response procedures.
Under Alberta's Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) legislation, employers must have an SDS for every hazardous product used in the workplace, and workers must be trained to read and use them. SDSs must be readily accessible to workers at all times.
SDSs are standardized in a 16-section format under the Globally Harmonized System (GHS). Sections include identification, hazard identification, composition, first aid measures, fire-fighting measures, handling and storage, exposure controls and PPE, and more.
We work with Alberta employers on OHS orders, COR audits, safety programs, and more.
