WCB experience rating is the method WCB-Alberta uses to adjust an employer's annual WCB premium based on their actual claims history compared to the industry average. Employers with fewer or lower-cost claims pay less; employers with more or higher-cost claims pay more.
WCB-Alberta uses an experience rating system to set each employer's annual premium. The base rate is set by industry, but the actual rate each employer pays is adjusted based on their own claims history — how many claims they have had, and how much those claims cost, compared to the average employer in their industry.
WCB-Alberta calculates each employer's experience using a rolling three-year window of claims data. The employer's actual claims cost is compared to the expected cost for an employer of that size in that industry. If actual costs are lower than expected, the employer gets a discount. If actual costs are higher, the employer pays a surcharge.
The adjustment is applied as a percentage modifier to the industry base rate. The range of the modifier depends on the employer's size — larger employers have a wider range of possible adjustment because their own data is more statistically credible.
Every accepted WCB claim affects experience rating — both the number of claims and the total cost. The cost includes wage replacement (lost-time benefits), medical costs, and rehabilitation costs. A single high-cost claim can significantly move the rating for a small employer.
Claims that are disputed and overturned, or where costs are transferred to a third party, are removed from the experience calculation. This is why proper claims management — including disputing incorrect claims — matters financially.
Alberta's PIR program allows COR or SECOR-certified employers to earn a rebate on their annual WCB premiums — up to 20% back depending on industry performance and the employer's own claims experience. The rebate is separate from the experience rating adjustment.
To qualify for the PIR rebate, the employer must hold a current COR or SECOR certificate and meet the program requirements for the year. The rebate is calculated and paid after the year-end.
We work with Alberta employers on OHS orders, COR audits, safety programs, and more.
