What does ACSA stand for in Alberta?

ACSA stands for the Alberta Construction Safety Association — a non-profit industry association and the primary Certifying Partner for COR and SECOR certification in Alberta's construction industry. ACSA administers the audits, certifies auditors, delivers required training, and reviews audit reports before the Government of Alberta issues the certificate.

Is ACSA the same as COR certification?

No — ACSA is the Certifying Partner that administers COR for Alberta construction; COR is the certificate itself. ACSA reviews your audit, then requests the Government of Alberta to issue the COR or SECOR certificate when it passes (80 percent overall and 50 percent per element for COR). ACSA is the path; COR is the result.

Who needs to register with ACSA in Alberta?

Alberta construction employers pursuing COR or SECOR through the construction Certifying Partner register with ACSA. Most contractors, subcontractors, and tradespeople classified under construction WCB codes use ACSA. Other industries — oil and gas, manufacturing, transportation — register with different certifying partners based on WCB classification.

What does ACSA NOT do?

ACSA does not issue COR — the Government of Alberta issues the certificate after ACSA reviews your passing audit report. ACSA does not prepare your safety program; that's the consultant's role. ACSA does not perform your initial certification audit when you've used them for prep training — audits are conducted by Certified COR Auditors (a certified peer on your team, or an independent consultant auditor). ACSA is not your day-to-day safety advisor either; they administer the certification system, not your operations.

ACSA vs Safety Ahead — who does what?

ACSA is the certifying partner — they administer the COR and SECOR programs, train auditors, deliver certifying-partner courses (including Principles of Health and Safety Management for SECOR assessors), maintain audit standards, and review audit reports before requesting that the Government of Alberta issue the certificate.

Safety Ahead is an ACSA member firm and consultant — we build your safety program, walk your sites, prepare your team for audit, and support you through the certification process. We don't issue COR; the Government of Alberta does. Allan Head is a Certified COR Auditor; on engagements where we're your prep firm, your certification audit is independent (peer or another consultant).

The owner's job is to operate the program in the field — supervisor leadership, crew standards, safe work practices. ACSA validates the system; we help build it; you live it.

ACSA's role in COR certification

ACSA is the certifying partner for most Alberta construction employers. ACSA registers employers, delivers required training, certifies auditors, reviews audit reports, and requests the Government of Alberta to issue the COR or SECOR certificate when an audit meets the standard (youracsa.ca; Alberta.ca COR program).

A passing external COR audit through ACSA requires at least 80% overall and 50% on each element. COR is typically valid for three years with annual internal maintenance (60% overall or an approved Action Plan) to stay certified and eligible for WCB-Alberta Partnerships in Injury Reduction (PIR) rebates.

ACSA training programs

Required courses go through ACSA—not through Safety Ahead. For COR, ACSA sets certifying-partner training (including auditor training for internal and peer auditors). For SECOR, ACSA requires assessor training such as Principles of Health and Safety Management (PHSM), plus other listed courses for initial certification and maintenance.
