COR Audit — Alberta
A COR audit is the formal assessment process used to verify that an employer's safety management system meets the COR standard in Alberta. COR certification requires both an internal audit (conducted by a trained internal auditor) and an external audit (conducted by a certified external auditor approved by the Certifying Partner).

Getting COR certified in Alberta is not just about having a safety program — it requires passing a formal audit. The COR audit evaluates whether your safety management system is documented, implemented, and effective. Understanding the audit process is essential for any Alberta employer pursuing COR.
Internal audit vs. external audit
The COR process requires two audits: an internal audit conducted by a trained employee (your internal auditor) and an external audit conducted by a certified auditor approved by your Certifying Partner (typically ACSA for construction).
The internal audit must be completed first and submitted to the Certifying Partner. If the internal audit score meets the threshold (typically 80% overall and 50% in each element), the employer is eligible for an external audit.
The external auditor independently verifies the internal audit findings and conducts their own assessment. The external audit score determines whether COR is awarded.
What auditors look for
COR auditors assess 19 elements of your safety management system, including: management commitment, hazard identification, training, inspections, incident investigation, emergency response, and worker participation.
Auditors look for evidence that the system is not just documented but actually implemented — worker interviews, inspection records, training records, and incident investigation reports are all reviewed.
